project descriptionIl complesso edilizio di San Donato è una porzione del quartiere 5 della città di Firenze. Ne fanno parte: il palazzo della sede della regione Toscana, il Palazzo di Giustizia, un’area verde pubblica di circa otto ettari, una zona residenziale che ospita l’università, un centro commerciale e altre realtà ricreative. Il complesso è stato costruito, a partire dagli anni novanta, sull’ex area Fiat dismessa negli anni ottanta, della quale rimangono la centrale termica e le case degli operai situate sul perimetro esterno del nuovo complesso. L’aspetto dell’area è sicuramente migliorato, ma ha anche generato un cambiamento sociale sui residenti del quartiere, originariamente appartenenti al ceto operaio, causando quindi una perdita identitaria sociale. Intorno al complesso di San Donato rimane il tessuto urbano preesistente realizzato a partire dagli anni cinquanta che contrasta nettamente con quello nuovo.

The San Donato building complex is a portion of district 5 in the city of Florence. It includes the building of the headquarters of the Region of Tuscany, the Palace of Justice, a public green area of about eight hectares, a residential area housing the university, a shopping centre and other recreational facilities. The complex was built, starting in the 1990s, on the former Fiat area decommissioned in the 1980s, of which the thermal power plant and the workers' houses located on the outer perimeter of the new complex remain. The appearance of the area has certainly improved, but it has also generated a social change on the residents of the neighbourhood, originally belonging to the working class, thus causing a loss of social identity. Around the San Donato complex, the pre-existing urban fabric built since the 1950s remains, contrasting sharply with the new one.
