project description Le Piagge è un moderno insediamento urbano che fa parte del quartiere 5 di Firenze. Già negli anni sessanta la zona era stata individuata come adatta per costruire nuove unità abitative, ma solo negli anni ottanta, a causa della urgente carenza abitativa, venne realizzato il complesso. La frettolosa realizzazione del quartiere ha avuto come conseguenze principali la mancanza dei principali servizi, l’inesistenza del piano viario e del trasporto pubblico. Il tessuto sociale era quindi composto principalmente da persone non benestanti. Il quartiere è stato per diverso tempo caratterizzato da tensioni sociali e microcriminalità, a causa anche della trascuratezza dell’amministrazione comunale. A partire dagli anni novanta il comune, sollecitato dai residenti, incominciò a occuparsene, vennero costruiti un centro commerciale, la stazione ferroviaria, servizi socio-assistenziali, aree verdi e parchi giochi. I residenti si riunirono nell’esperimento sociale Comunità delle Piagge nato per annullare le tensioni e migliorare le condizioni generali. Altro contributo fondamentale è stato dato dalla comunità cristiana di base di Don Santoro.

Le Piagge is a modern urban settlement that is part of Florence's District 5. In the early 1960s the area was identified as suitable for building new housing units, but only in the 1980s the complex was built, also due to an urgent housing shortage. The hasty realisation of the district had as its main consequences the lack of main services, the non-existence of a road plan and public transport. The complex was therefore mainly inhabited by people from low social class. For a long time, the neighbourhood was characterised by social tensions and petty crime, also due to the neglect of the municipal administration. Starting in the 1990s, the municipality, urged on by the residents, began to take care of it, and a shopping centre, railway station, social welfare services, green areas and playgrounds were built. Residents came together in the social experiment Comunità delle Piagge, which was created to ease tensions and improve general conditions. Another fundamental contribution was made by Don Santoro's basic Christian community
