project descriptionIl Terzolle è un torrente, di circa 10 km di lunghezza, che nasce sulle colline a nord di Firenze, attraversa il quartiere di Rifredi e dopo essere confluito nel torrente Mugnone sfocia nell’Arno. Il suo nome deriva dalla pietra Tertium lapidem, che segnava il terzo miglio della via Cassia nova da Firenze, e che si congiungeva con quella vecchia in corrispondenza di un ponte costruito sul torrente.
Questa serie di fotografie mette in risalto la trasformazione che ha subito il Terzolle a opera dell’uomo lungo tutto il suo percorso. L’antropizzazione e l’inurbamento sono progressivi: nel tratto iniziale è ancora la natura l’elemento dominante, avvicinandosi alla periferia della città ci sono i primi interventi dell’uomo, limitati alla costruzione di orti sulle rive, successivamente il torrente incontra i primi argini e le prime opere di regimentazione, per poi essere completamente inurbato e antropizzato attraversando il quartiere di Careggi e il punto di confluenza con il Mugnone. Il suo percorso continua irregimentato fino alla confluenza con l’Arno, dove scompare sovrastato da un grande viadotto. In alcuni tratti, pur essendo l’impatto dell’antropizzazione elevato, si ha comunque l’impressione che la natura e la flora del Terzolle resistano all’accerchiamento delle opere di urbanizzazione, in altri invece il torrente ne è completamente soffocato, scomparendo quasi, diventando un soggetto secondario.

The Terzolle is a stream, about 10 km long, that rises in the hills north of Florence, flows through the Rifredi district and after flowing into the Mugnone stream flows into the Arno. Its name derives from the Tertium lapidem stone, which marked the third mile of the Via Cassia nova from Florence, and which joined the old one at a bridge built over the stream.
This series of photographs highlights the transformation that the Terzolle has undergone by man throughout its course. The anthropisation and urbanisation are progressive: in the initial stretch, nature is still the dominant element, as we approach the outskirts of the city there are the first human interventions, limited to the construction of vegetable gardens on the banks, then the stream encounters the first banks and the first regimentation works, to then be completely urbanised and anthropised crossing the Careggi district and the point of confluence with the Mugnone. Its course continues regimented until the confluence with the Arno, where it disappears overlooked by a large viaduct. In some stretches, even though the impact of anthropisation is high, one still has the impression that the nature and flora of the Terzolle resist the encirclement of urbanisation works, while in others the torrent is completely suffocated, almost disappearing, becoming a secondary subject.
