project descriptionIl quartiere Le Fornaci è situato nella periferia nord-est della città di Pistoia. Il suo progetto di edilizia popolare, risalente agli anni ottanta, fu commissionato dallo IACP e coordinato dall’architetto Leonardo Savioli. L’intento del progettista era di realizzare un nuovo quartiere che non avesse un aspetto popolare, nel senso dequalificante del termine, bensì una struttura cittadina nuova e dignitosa che fosse anche un punto di rottura rispetto al tessuto urbanistico e paesaggistico della periferia di Pistoia. Allo scopo nella progettazione vennero coinvolti sia le ditte costruttrici che i cittadini. Gli edifici realizzati, tra gli altri, Triangolo e Nastro alludono agli elementi del paesaggio e della città storica di Pistoia e rappresentano rispettivamente il monte e il fiume. La realizzazione finale del quartiere è stata oggetto di discussioni negli anni, per via delle forme geometriche particolari adottate. Oggi, pur essendo comunque presenti nel quartiere un numero sufficiente di esercizi commerciali e altri servizi, persistono problematiche tipiche delle zone periferiche cittadine.

The Le Fornaci district is located on the north-eastern outskirts of the city of Pistoia. Its social housing project, dating back to the 1980s, was commissioned by the IACP and coordinated by architect Leonardo Savioli. The planner's intention was to build a new neighbourhood that would not have a popular appearance, in the de-qualifying sense of the term, but rather a new and dignified city structure that would also be a break with the urban and landscape fabric of Pistoia's suburbs. To this end, both construction companies and citizens were involved in the design. The buildings constructed, among others, Triangolo and Nastro allude to elements of the landscape and the historical city of Pistoia and represent the mountain and the river respectively. The final realisation of the district has been the subject of debate over the years, due to the particular geometric shapes adopted. Today, although a sufficient number of commercial activities and other services are present in the district, problems typical of the city's peripheral areas persist.
